An early birthday present

I know in the last post I talked about ungrateful recipients of hand-knit items.

On the polar opposite of this spectrum are grateful individuals. People who love my knitted items with a lot of love, appreciation and sometimes, some admiration. The first person that comes to mind is my dear grandmother. About a year ago, she had to go into assisted living for a few weeks in PA while my aunt, who takes care of her in Atlanta, needed to settle things with her old apartment in New Jersey. She couldn’t bring much because the room wasn’t all that big when you compare it to her house and she was only staying there a few weeks so why over pack? Despite this, she insisted she bring the Christmas quilt I made her. When we visited her up in PA, I was so unbelievably touched when I saw it in her room. It was October yet she insisted on having her granddaughter’s Christmas quilt.

So I’ve been knitting a lot for people lately and I began to think about what to knit her. Socks would be a bad idea because I slip in them and I’ve got a sense of balance. I didn’t think socks would be wise for my granny because I would hate for her to slip in them. Sweaters/hats/scarves/mittens are probably used in Atlanta but they’d probably not be used as much down there as I might like.

Then it hit me

A SHAWL. When she was up for mom’s wedding, she loved mom’s shawl! Why not make one for her??

Granny has a weakness for lavender both as a color and a scent. I originally started a shawl for her months ago but the pattern, while beautiful, was not very memorizable. (I made that word up ) I then found the Shetland Shawl on Ravelry and just KNEW that shawl would be the one. I looked at the other user’s Shetland shawls and got the general consensus that it flies off the needles. I couldn’t agree more. I casted on two days ago and I’ve completed three repeats of the pattern on the metro. Here is a picture I took last night

I am going to have this puppy done in a few weeks and I can not be happier. Mom and Ray will be going down to Atlanta in the end of March so I’ll give it to them to give her for an early birthday present. Hopefully, someone will capture her reaction on a camera. I can’t wait to see that!!

To make sure I do a good job, I’ve got a pretty strict quality controller that takes her duties very seriously!

  1. Pretty, pretty shade of purple! The pattern looks great too. Will have to investigate this closer, mmhhhhmmm…

  2. Ran across your site through Ravelry and thought I’d comment since you have the comment love. You have some great stuff and this looks like it’ll be a beautiful shawl.

If you’re doing the sock club with Tonks’ yarn, I’m sure I’ll see more of you on there.

  3. [...] end this post, some pics of the quality controllers. One might have noted the technical judge inspecting my work. We also have an “overall comfort judge” to evaluate the final finished [...]
